Is it legal to own hedgehogs where you live?

Before writing the application form – please read this and check if your city/state allows you to own a hedgehog or if you are required to get a permit first. Please do your own due-diligence.

  1. Markham, Ontario. Canada – It is prohibited to own a hedgehog in Markham as a by-law and would require a permit on a case by case basis. https://www.markham.ca/sites/default/files/about-city-markham/animal%20control/PROHIBITED%2BANIMALS.pdf . Based on a case back in 2017 from a past customer – she was able to be granted a permit which was sent to me so I can provide her a hedgehog of her choice.
  2. Ottawa, Canada – It is prohibited to own a hedgehog in Ottawa as a by law stated on their “Schedule B – Prohibited List”. https://ottawa.ca/en/living-ottawa/laws-licences-and-permits/laws/laws-z/animal-care-and-control-law-no-2003-077#section-a55de3b1-697a-4b2e-b345-fdee3f3849e9
  3. Essex, Ontario. Canada – Essex has a new by-law and it states that it is prohibited to own a hedgehog in the Town of Essex. Page 34 – “Schedule C – Bylaw Number 1606”. https://www.essex.ca/en/town-hall/resources/BY-LAW-1606—Animal-Care-Control-BL-May-2017.pdf
  4. Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada – the prohibited list is not publicly available at this time but a permit is required to own them. They also are a requirement by the airlines if they are going to be shipped by plane. A sample look here:
